Communities Coordinator - ELIXIR

Contract Duration: 3 years (renewable to a maximum of 9 years)
Grading: 7 (monthly salary starting from £3,486.80 after tax)

The main responsibility of the ELIXIR Communities Coordinator is to support ELIXIR Communities to effectively collaborate across Nodes and link to the established and emerging ELIXIR services. You will take responsibility for the development and integration of ELIXIR’s Communities with our Platforms and together with the Platform Coordinators at the ELIXIR Hub and ensure ELIXIR services and projects are effectively used and its impacts are documented.

As the Communities Coordinator, you will work closely with scientists and technical experts across teams from our ELIXIR Nodes, to ensure uptake, interoperability and long-term development of ELIXIR’s resources. You will oversee our technical planning, implementation, document progress and impact assessment by establishing and monitoring performance, quality and impact indicators.

In addition, you will take a lead in coordinating external funding that Communities may receive (e.g. from E.C. grants). Finally, you will have the opportunity to work with the Human Data Communities Coordinator to ensure that processes and strategies are consistently applied across the whole ELIXIR portfolio.  

Your role

  • Coordinate the operations of the ELIXIR Communities, working with the leads to build the Community Strategies and execute on the funded projects the Community has received.
  • Working with the Operations Team, ensure that ELIXIR processes for selection and execution of the ELIXIR Implementation studies are properly followed.
  • Using the established ELIXIR processes ensure that any new Communities are identified and developed as agreed by the ELIXIR Director and the Heads of Nodes.
  • As required, working with the Head of Programme and Strategy and the Head of Operations develop new processes to bring forward and develop new Communities.
  • Working with the External Relations Team, ensure that where appropriate links to the industry by the Communities can be established and that ELIXIR has robust methods to document the impact that the Communities are realising including reporting to the Heads of Nodes and the Scientific Advisory Board on progress and activities.
  • Provide additional support for ongoing key projects, as required by the ELIXIR leadership

You have

As the successful candidate it is likely that you will have:

  • A degree in either life sciences or a subject that demonstrates the ability to analyse information and present arguments coherently
  • Knowledge of the operations, governance and business models of international organisations and science initiatives 
  • A high level of literacy and excellent English language skills 
  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge of desktop computing software required in a modern office-based environment (e.g. MS Office, Google Apps and workflow management software)
  • Ability to effectively collaborate and deliver within a high-paced professional and multinational team-environment
  • Strong analytical, evaluative, and problem-solving abilities
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal

This will be a busy role with frequently changing priorities so it is essential that the post-holder is able to:

  • Set objectives and plan work independently based on agreed outcomes
  • Meet deadlines and manage priorities to handle a heavy workload
  • Work to a high level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Occasionally work outside normal office hours and travel to ELIXIR Nodes

You might also have

  • Working knowledge of an additional European language is an advantage, though not a prerequisite
  • Knowledge and understanding of the European bioinformatics landscape; a broad network in life science research communities is desirable

Chief Technical Officer - ELIXIR

Contract Duration: 3 years
Grading: 8 (monthly salary starting at £3,999.80 per month net)

Your role

We have an opportunity for a dynamic and experienced manager to join us as the new ELIXIR Chief Technical Officer.

As CTO you will establish and maintain effective relationships with national ELIXIR Nodes and other European partners to drive the development distributed services from Nodes across Europe.

You enjoy leading and developing people and as CTO you will lead a team of six experienced scientific coordinators. Reporting to the ELIXIR Director and an active member of the ELIXIR Hub Management Team you will combine your knowledge and experience of life science data with management and technical leadership to drive delivery and consolidation of ELIXIR's portfolio of technical and scientific projects by actively identifying and implementing synergies across the portfolio. Using your community-building and networking skills you will manage the needs from our many stakeholders and drive collaborations across Europe and globally.

The ELIXIR CTO operates in a matrix-managed, project-driven organisation. This requires you to lead, and be led, within multiple, outcome-driven temporary operational teams in addition to the formal line organisation. The ELIXIR CTO is a busy role with frequently changing priorities and extensive external contacts, so it is important that you are able to function comfortably in a team environment and can relate well to co-workers and the public. We work across multiple time zones with European and global partners. You will need to occasionally work irregular/extra hours including evenings, and exceptionally, weekends. The ELIXIR CTO needs to travel in Europe and internationally as necessary.

You have

As the successful candidate it is likely you will have:

  • University degree in the field of life-science, computer science, or similar
  • An advanced degree in one of these fields is a plus
  • Solid experience (5+ years) of bioinformatics / medical informatics research and service delivery
  • People management experience with demonstrated ability to lead and develop high-performing teams to deliver against agreed outcomes
  • Demonstrated ability to predict and project technical developments and needs
  • A high level of literacy is required with documented ability to effectively communicate with excellent verbal and written English
  • Ability to professionally represent ELIXIR at public events, conferences and scientific meetings with attention to personal conduct and professional appearance.
  • Ability to work within a team

Working knowledge to a professional level of additional European languages is a strong asset for the role.
