ELIXIR has launched eight projects addressing the scientific and technological ambitions of its new Scientific Programme for 2024 to 2028. Further projects covering the Programme’s Node and people development objectives will be launched later this year.
The projects were launched on 1 January 2024 and run for three years with funding of 4.5 million Euros. Called ‘Commissioned Services’, the projects fund activities which connect experts in ELIXIR Nodes and support the long-term strategy of ELIXIR.
There is one new project for each of ELIXIR’s three priority scientific areas: Cellular and molecular research; Biodiversity, food security and pathogens; and Human data and translational research. New co-leads were recently announced for the first two areas, and the associated projects fund leadership and strategy development, ELIXIR community engagement and the provision of funding calls and pilot projects.
The Human data and translational research project builds on the progress made by the Human Data Communities during the previous five-year Programme 2019-2023. A new Human Data Communities Steering Group has been formed which, in coordination with the Head of the Human Genomics and Translational Data, will support the ELIXIR strategy development until the end of 2026. Funded activities will enable researchers, including research clinicians, to use ELIXIR’s infrastructure for human genomic, phenotypic, imaging and demographic data to support discovery, analysis, innovation and integration of research findings into the clinic and healthcare.
The remaining five projects address ELIXIR’s five technical priorities in compute, tools, interoperability, data and training. Each project connects different ELIXIR Nodes to achieve the technical aims of the ELIXIR’s strategy in research data management and data sharing, reproducible analytics and infrastructure and federated service delivery. Bringing together experts from different Nodes enables new collaborations and the development of resources in a unified way across Europe. This in turn reduces barriers for a much wider reuse of common technologies and standards in life sciences research.
The new projects are listed below, further details on each project are available on the Commissioned Services webpages.
