This week's highlights

Another successful BioHackathon Europe!

As many of you will know last week we held the 4th BioHackathon Europe meeting. This attracted ~420 participants from across the world to work on diverse 37 life-science projects.

The event was our first true foray into a large-scale hybrid event and we're pleased to say that it certainly did not hinder the scientific developments! Stay tuned to find out more about the event in our upcoming news release.

PhylomeDB V5: an expanding repository for genome-wide catalogues of annotated gene phylogenies

An ELIXIR Spain paper
PhylomeDB is a unique knowledge base providing public access to mineable and browsable catalogues of pre-computed genome-wide collections of annotated sequences, alignments and phylogenies (i.e. phylomes) of homologous genes, as well as to their corresponding phylogeny-based orthology and paralogy relationships. Here, we describe the latest evolution of PhylomeDB (version 5).

Performance of Web tools for predicting changes in protein stability caused by mutations

An ELIXIR Italy paper

Despite decades on developing dedicated Web tools, it is still difficult to predict correctly the changes of the thermodynamic stability of proteins caused by mutations. Here, we assessed the reliability of five recently developed Web tools, in order to evaluate the progresses in the field.

New article on how patient data is helping to create better artificial intelligence models

This article argues that medical research will not progress without data and its re-use. Collected data can be used to create artificial intelligence models to make speedier diagnoses and to support care decisions. New data analysis technologies emerge all the time, but how to make data available for all researchers?

Your help needed! Share your experience of sex & gender reporting in biomedical research

The project 35 FAIRX from the BioHackathon Europe 2021 has produced a survey. The aim is to promote systematic reporting of sex and gender in research and foster diversity in biomedical practices. We want to observe the awareness of domain experts regarding these two variables in biomedical research, as well as their attitude towards capturing diversity, including other dimensions of intersectionality such as age, race or ethnicity. Please fill in or share the survey below.
