Applying FAIR principles to hospital data: challenges and opportunities in a pandemic

TeSS, EXCELERATE, RDMkit

The heterogeneous information systems in hospitals can result in fragmentation of data over multiple data silos with clinical observations not able to be reused efficiently. Research data management in hospitals needs to make COVID-19 observational patient data more Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable (FAIR) for humans and machines. Our work demonstrates that a FAIR research data management plan based on ontological models for data and metadata, open Science, Semantic Web technologies and FAIR Data Points is providing data infrastructure in the hospital for machine actionable FAIR digital objects.

Towards a metagenomics machine learning interpretable model for colorectal cancer

An ELIXIR-ES paper

We performed a meta-analysis of 1042 fecal metagenomic samples from seven publicly available studies. We used an interpretable machine learning approach based on functional profiles, instead of the conventional taxonomic profiles, to produce a highly accurate predictor of colorectal cancer with better precision than those of previous proposals. Functional profiles have demonstrated superior accuracy in predicting colorectal cancer and adenoma conditions than taxonomic profiles and additionally and provide useful hints on the molecular mechanisms operating in the microbiota behind these conditions.
