Managing the life cycle of a portfolio of open data resources at the SIB

An ELIXIR-CH paper

The SIB Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics provides the life science community with a portfolio of openly accessible, high-quality databases and software platforms. This review presents the ecosystem of data resources at SIB, the process used for the identification, evaluation and development of resources, and the support activities that SIB provides. A set of indicators has been put in place to select the resources and establish quality standards, reflecting their multifaceted nature and complexity. We explain how SIB's leading tools and databases are fostered by the institute, leading to best-in-class resources to tackle pressing societal issues from disease outbreaks and cancer to biodiversity and open science.

A Micro-CT image gallery to show the effects of ocean warming and acidification on marine gastropod shells

An ELIXIR-GR paper

Digitisation of specimens (e.g. zoological, botanical) can provide access to advanced morphological and anatomical information and promote new research opportunities. Micro-CT technology supports the development of virtual museums and laboratories to share 3D imaging data. There is currently a lack of universal standards for publication and curation of micro-CT datasets. We created a virtual gallery of the marine gastropod Hexaplextrunculus under increased temperature and low pH conditions simulating future climate change scenarios. The images were annotated with detailed metadata and are interactively displayed and manipulated with online tools using the principles of FAIR data.
