Biodiversity data supports research on human infectious diseases: Global trends, challenges, and opportunities
A BiCIKL paper
The unprecedented generation of large volumes of biodiversity data is consistently contributing to a wide range of disciplines, including disease ecology. Despite several data-mobilization initiatives, the usage of biodiversity data for research into disease dynamics has not yet been fully leveraged. To explore current contributions and trends, and to identify limitations, the authors characterised biodiversity data usage in scientific publications related to human health, contrasting patterns of studies citing the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) with those obtaining data from other sources. The contribution of biodiversity data to understand infectious disease dynamics should be acknowledged, strengthened, and promoted.

Trojan-horse silk fibroin nanocarriers loaded with a re-call antigen to redirect immunity against cancer
An ELIXIR Implementation Study
The current challenge for immunotherapies is to generate effective antitumor immunity. Since tumor immune escape mechanisms do not impact pre-existing and consolidated immune responses, researchers tested the hypothesis of redirecting a pregenerated immunity to cancer: to recall a non-tumor antigen response against the tumor, SFNs have been selected as Trojan-horse carriers, promoting the antigen uptake by the tumor cells. SFNs-OVA and SFNs-CpG show the efficacy of an innovative active immunotherapy approach based on the redirection of pre-existing immunity against cancer cells. This approach could be applied for solid cancer treatments if translated into the clinic using re-call antigens of childhood vaccination.
