Evolutionary Aspects of Selenium Binding Protein (SBP)

An ELIXIR-GR paper

Selenium-binding proteins represent a ubiquitous protein family and recently SBP1 was described as a new stress response regulator in plants. SBP1 has been characterized as a methanethiol oxidase. In mammals, it is involved in the regulation of anti-carcinogenic growth and progression as well as reduction/oxidation modulation and detoxification. In this work, the authors delineate the functional potential of certain motifs of SBP in the context of evolutionary relationships. The results demonstrate the emergence of SBP from bacteria and most likely as a methanethiol oxidase.

Resources and tools for rare disease variant interpretation

An ELIXIR-IT paper

Collectively, rare genetic disorders affect a substantial portion of the world's population. In most cases, those affected face difficulties in receiving a clinical diagnosis and genetic characterization. The understanding of the molecular mechanisms of these diseases and the development of therapeutic treatments for patients are also challenging. In this review, the authors highlight the most relevant online resources and computational tools for genome interpretation that can enhance the diagnosis, clinical management, and development of treatments for rare disorders.
