Public data and entrepreneurship in the life sciences

ELIXIR welcomed two external experts on entrepreneurship and bio data, Hannes Rothe and Sirkka Jarvenpaa, to Hinxton, Cambridgeshire, to deliver a talk and discussion on the value of public data for entrepreneurs in the life sciences. 

Presenting to a near full room of over forty individuals from EMBL-EBI, the Sanger Institute, the BioData Innovation Centre (BIC) at the Wellcome Genome Campus, as well as external attendees, Hannes spoke about a range of topics including: 

  • How entrepreneurs and scientists can create a business using bio data resources
  • The importance of organising data for digital entrepreneurs to scale up, particularly in the field of genomics
  • The role of research infrastructure providers and what they need to help digital entrepreneurs to align science and business
  • The pros and cons of open data initiatives and data standardisation efforts
