ELIXIR at ISMB/ECCB 2025 in Liverpool

From 20 to 24 July 2025, the ELIXIR team was in Liverpool, UK for ISMB/ECCB 2025 with over 2,000 bioinformaticians from around the world attending. As a sponsor of the conference, ELIXIR had a dedicated booth and hosted a track programme with NIH Office of Data Science Strategy (NIH ODSS) on biodata resources. ELIXIR UK co-organised a Bioinformatics in the UK track on the second day, chaired by Carole Goble (ELIXIR UK Joint Head of Node) and Janet Thornton. ELIXIR staff talking to ISMB/ECCB participant

The ELIXIR/NIH ODSS track programme addressed the balance between the long-term sustainability of biodata resources and the rapidly changing scientific and technological landscapes.

The track programme focused on three themes:

  • Ontologies and knowledge graphs in the biodata ecosystem: to highlight leading initiatives that embed semantic frameworks into the heart of biomedical data infrastructures
  • Scalable and sustainable biodata infrastructure: to discuss the evolving technical foundations that support biodata platforms, with a focus on strategies that balance innovation, performance and sustainability
  • Funding models, impact and engagement in biodata resources: to bring together different perspectives and align user needs, evidencing impact and securing long-term sustainability in resource-constrained environments

“Running the open data services which underpin biology while keeping pace with rapid innovation is a global challenge. ISMB/ECCB was a valuable opportunity to join forces once again with our NIH ODSS colleagues and share insights and experiences with attendees, ensuring our activities continue to meet the needs of researchers worldwide.”
Peter Maccallum, Chief Technical Officer, ELIXIR
