Data Carpentry hackathon and workshop at ELIXIR Netherlands

The University of Utrecht in the Netherlands hosted two Data Carpentry events on 22-25 June 2015, as part of the ELIXIR Data and Software Carpentry Pilot action. Coordinated by ELIXIR UK, the pilots aims to develop training programme across the ELIXIR infrastructure.

During the two-day hackathon, the participants - representing ten ELIXIR Nodes - w orked on Data Carpentry materials to be used in Data Carpentry workshops. The hackathon was followed by Data Carpentry workshop run by Karthik Ram (University of Berkeley, rOpenSci, Data Carpentry) and Aleksandra Pawlik (University of Manchester, Software Sustainability Institute). Around 30 students from all fields of life science attended and followed the standard Data Carpentry curriculum. The last module covered ELIXIR Cloud resources and used the materials created during the hackathon.

The ELIXIR Data and Software Carpentry Pilot has started in 2015 to leverage the work of the existing international Data Carpentry network in developing training programme for ELIXIR. It is led by ELIXIR UK, with number of other national nodes partnering up, including ELIXIR Netherlands, Finland and Switzerland.
