The importance of achieving a secure life science data infrastructure is becoming increasingly apparent as ever greater volumes of complex data are being generated from national and EC-funded research projects. The Open Data mandates of national and European funders are a welcome step in ensuring maximum re-use from publically-funded research: accessible, well structured data gets re-used in science, and Open Data is in turn a major driver of innovation. Bioinformatics databases form an integral part of the data infrastructure in the life sciences, and act as the bedrock for future scientific breakthroughs in health, the environment and the bioindustries.
The high-level conference was held to address several aspects of this topic, from the perspective of funders, infrastructure operators and users across industry and academia.
